Tony Clark, awful hitter, good guy

·1 min

You know, I hated how he was a waste of $5 million when he played for the Sox, and I always made fun of the fact that he was referred to universally as a “nice guy”, but I’ve concluded that Tony Clark really is a nice guy. Seems to be the only Yankee willing to go on record to take Giambi’s side:

“My concern for Jason is always focused on his overall health continuing to improve,” said Tony Clark, who backed up Giambi at first base in 2004. “Baseball tends to be secondary when you make the realization that your physical and mental health is not sound. My thoughts and prayers will continue to be with Jason as he and his family deal with what has developed into a very difficult situation.” (link)

Maybe I’m generous to Clark because his double turned into a ground-rule double, but that sounds like a genuinely nice thing to say - focusing on the fact that Jason Giambi isn’t well, regardless of whether or not he brought it upon himself.

Of course, you could always take the low road and call Giambi not just a “drug cheat” but also “ugly”:

Conveniently ignoring the fact that Sheffield got a free pass…
