Top 10 Games of the Season

·2 mins

ESPN lists their top 10 games of the season, which I’d hardly argue with, except for the Pirates-Cubs doubleheader they have at #9 - personally, I’d take Mike Maroth’s one-hitter against the Yankees, at least for the aspect of “redemption” of his terrible, no-good, awful 2003 season.

Four of the top 10 games are either Sox-Yankees or Dodgers-Giants. One thing about wanting parity in baseball I’ve been thinking about is that parity may also mean the reduction in intensity of the old rivalries. Those matchups were greater this year, I think, for actually being crucial to the division races. Not saying parity is a bad thing - just that pure parity is not an unalloyed good. (Or, to put it another way: if you were a strict traditionalist, you might actually be in favour of an era of less parity…)

Randomly, looking back on those games: are the Braves the best team to ever be on the receiving end of a perfect game? I’d still say the 1988 Dodgers (Tom Browning threw one for Cincy against the Dodgers that September) hold it, but the Braves are a pretty good shot at #2. Sure, the Braves lineup that day was affected by injuries, but still, this is a team that coasted to the NL East title.
